IST's DATEM Division

The DATEM division of Industrial Service Technology is a world leader in distributed data acquisition and embedded control technology for industrial automation. With the largest selection of BITBUS Distributed Control Network hardware and software available in the industry, DATEM has achieved success in the marketplace by making the technology both practical and easy to use.

DATEM offers a complete selection of BITBUS embedded control hardware and software products designed for the OEM and industrial end user marketplace. IST's broad range of industrial experience and skills open up many new opportunities for additional products which will ensure that DATEM will be the intelligent control solution for years to come.

Distributed Network Controls

Recent innovations in data communications and micro controller technology have forced engineers to rethink traditional approaches to industrial automation. While centralized control methods use the communications network as an I/O bus, the distributed control approach places a layer of local control between the central computer and groups of I/O points. Of the many distributed control bus architectures available today, BITBUS has proven to be one of the most flexible and cost effective.

DATEM - The Industrial Standard

Based on RS485 electrical specifications and SDLC communication, BITBUS utilizes a Master/Slave protocol that allows up to 250 remote modules to be multidropped from the same set of inexpensive twisted pair wires. With a maximum distance of 13.2 kilometers (43,000 ft.), and a maximum data rate of 2.4Mbaud, the cost/performance characteristics of this network are impressive.

The DATEM Product Line

Many of the BITBUS embedded control and I/O modules manufactured by DATEM are based on the Intel 8044 micro controller. The 8044 features an independent network interface unit incorporated into the silicon and a real time multitasking operating system embedded in internal ROM. The Remote Access and Control task provides access to this local operating system from across the network.

Pre-written low level drivers on all DATEM remote modules provide access to the hardware from user written tasks and from anywhere on the network.

DATEM 2000

DATEM 2000 products are based on the 80x86 family. Engineers and programmers can now take advantage of powerful processors and development tools available to PC users. Programmers can use software packages such as Borland's "Turbo C" and "Turbo Pascal" to develop software.

DATEM 2000 products conform to an established and proven IEEE standard and are compatible with all DATEM products.

Host Adapters

While any DATEM controller can operate "stand alone" or in groups of modules tied together, industry has found that using the DATEM Distributed Control Network is an excellent technique for interfacing powerful mini and micro computers to the plant floor. DATEM was designed for the efficient transfer of control messages, unlike networks developed for the efficient transfer of vast quantities of data. Host adapters are available for IBM PC, AT and PS/2 computers as well as may others.
